Subjects Taught
5th Grade

In 2009, I graduated with Honors from Horn Lake High School. I quickly decided to major in Elementary Education. I enrolled at the University of Mississippi in the fall of 2009. In January of 2009 I moved back to Desoto County and enrolled at Northwest Mississippi Community College. I earned my Associate's Degree from there in 2011. I then enrolled at the great University of Mississippi again and earned my Bachelor's in Liberal Arts, Elementary Education. I am currently working on my Master's in Educational Leadership from Arkansas State University.I am First Aid and CPR Certified.

This is my 5th year teaching. I have been blessed to have spent my entire career at Walls Elementary. My first year I was a 3rd grade teacher in a self-contained classroom. My second year I was moved to 4th grade where I taught English/Language Arts. Last year I started in 3rd grade but was quickly moved into READ180, which was a program to help struggling readers. I was then moved again in January 2016 and began teaching 4th grade ELA again. I now teach 5th grade ELA. Before teaching I worked at a local daycare for 6 years. In all, I have at least 10 years of working with children in a learning environment.

If you're reading this then that means you are interested in learning a little about me, Nathan Hickerson. If that is true than congrats, you are about to learn about an amazing human being. My name is Nathan Hickerson. I am currently 25, but that will change in a year or two. I have lived in Western Desoto County my whole life. My mother, father, aunts, and uncles all graduated from Horn Lake High School. My whole family has lived in this area for years. I am married to a beautiful woman I met in high school. Chelsea's family has also been in this area for years. She actually attended Walls Elementary as a child. We had our first child in September. Very Excited. As a teacher I love to get involved. I believe students need to do more than just sit and memorize. We will get up and move. We will laugh, explore, debate, ask, and learn. I encourage children to learn how to dig as deep into a topic or discussion as possible. I hope to have a class full of children who tear ideas down and rebuild them stronger than before. My type of teaching could best be described as a mixture of "Old tried and true" with "new and modern". At the end of the day my students' success at LIFE is my number one priority.
